Meet Mark-Hans Richer

Before he ever set foot in a C-suite, Mark-Hans Richer was a Northwestern history major with no money, no business training, and a stubborn belief that Willie the Wildcat deserved a better stuffed animal.

When he brought the idea to his dad, the answer was blunt: “I’m not giving you the money — go get a business plan.”

So Mark-Hans did. A local bank said yes, and by the time he paid the loan back early, he’d taught himself pricing, segmentation, and brand loyalty in a way no classroom ever could.

That instinct followed him into seven years at DDB Chicago and then nearly a decade at GM, where he helped save a GMC brand that was close to being folded into Chevy. It also produced an $8 million bet on Oprah Winfrey that made a brand-new car one of the most-searched terms in America in a single week.

From there, Mark-Hans became the first-ever CMO at two different companies: nine years reinventing Harley-Davidson, including a high-stakes negotiation with the Vatican, followed by nine years building Fortune Brands’ marketing function from the ground up.

Now he’s channeling three decades of C-suite lessons into Richer Confidential, and in this conversation, he walks through some of the thinking that shaped it.

In this episode, we cover:

The segmentation and pricing instincts from his college side hustle that still apply whether you’re building a brand or running a P&L
How to make the case for a bold, unproven idea when leadership wants ROI guarantees upfront
The pitch that got GM to say yes to an $8M bet on Oprah
How to find new customers hiding inside a brand you already have, without alienating the ones who got you here
The negotiation instincts it takes to land a partnership everyone tells you is impossible (his Vatican story is the proof)
Why “data worship” and blind faith in predictive analytics are quietly wrecking good decisions, and what to trust instead
